I’m finally finishing up the long neglected project of pulling together all the best photos from our Southeast Asia trip. I apologize to those who have an email subscription to this blog. You’ll be getting a few emails in a row while I get them all posted!
These are the images from our time staying at Brian’s Villa. Brian is a friend and colleague of Eric, and we had a chance to meet up with him and some other friends in Koh Samui to relax and recharge before continuing on our adventure.

It’s been a while since my last post– more than a couple months. Six shoe sizes, five haircuts, five inches of vertical growth, and few border crossings to be vaguely exact. The rambling that follows is a revised draft, originally written during our bus ride into Vietnam from Kampot, Cambodia…8 weeks ago I think? We just finished up a relaxing stay at a friend/boatmate’s place on Koh Samui, Thailand. See Brian’s villa here. (We exercised our second of a three entry visas for Thailand.) Either Kelly or I will speak more about that in a future post. Maybe soon, but more likely not until after next Christmas. For the curious few, we’re still alive and well. With 3 more weeks abroad, we’re starting the last hoorah phase of our trip, currently in Malaysia, heading south into Singapore and Indonesia before our return. Fun fun!

We had heard that you could barter with the fishermen for dinner. This is one of those ideas that Alex grasped onto, as he does, and he was determined to make it happen. One day when we shared our anchorage with a bunch of other fishing boats, Alex decided it was time. He set his sights on the friendly boat that had waved at us on the way in. He figured out how to say “fish” in Thai by looking our Thai / English dictionary, then hopped in the kayak. Eric equipped him with a few beers in a bag as “payment,” and out he rowed.

It really feels like I should knock on wood before writing this post. We’ve been generally healthy and have had no major catastrophes. (Knock. Knock.)
The Hole in the Boat
I suppose you can guess where this is going.
Eric and the big boys had gone ashore in Koh Lipe, and Sawyer and I were hanging out in my cabin in the boat playing cards. All of a sudden, the boat lurched and there was a loud crash and splintering sound. I jumped up on deck to see a medium sized ferry backing away from the boat, and a man perched on the bow, holding his palm up at me and shouting “It’s OK! It’s OK!.” Our boat had been hit right at Alex’s cabin, on the port (left) side of the bow (front).

The final installment of posts about our charter! You can read Summary 1/3 here, or 2/3 here. (For anyone wondering where we actually are — we are leaving Dalat, Vietnam tomorrow morning to head back to Saigon, where we will visit with Eric’s friend. We are considering settling in Saigon for the rest of our trip.)
16. Koh Hong : December 28th, 2014 – Koh Hong was the beginning of our venturing in Phang Nga Bay, a picturesque area that is characterized by towering rocky cliffs and an endless number of small islands. When we first started out on the boat, I found navigating by sight pretty doable. Match what you see in front of you to the islands and land on the chart. Not too hard. But the second I got up here I was lost. There were so many islands that I found it impossible to figure out where we were on the chart at any given time. Good thing we had an expert on board.
